The housing crisis isn't a demand problem. It's a systems problem. A new build can drag on for months, balloon in price, and still feel like a one-off prototype at the end, because jobsite construction stays serialized and weather-dependent: floor, then walls, then roof, each step waiting on the last, at the mercy of weather, inspectors, and a dozen subcontractors.
Vikas brings a complex-systems mindset from his years leading major deployments at Amazon Robotics after the Kiva acquisition, and he's applying it to one of the most stubborn industries in the country. In our low-cost fabrication centers, that sequence doesn't apply. Ceilings and walls go up before the floor does. We decouple the work from the site entirely, and once you stop building in sequence, you start building in parallel. That's the idea behind "bending gravity": worker augmentation lets generalists take on skilled tasks, and our robotics roadmap is built to raise automation without the price tag of traditional industrial systems.
This matters most in infill development, where zoning differences and approval friction across municipalities can push costs to $300 to $400 per square foot. Our computational design and software-driven engineering let us adapt to those local requirements while still mass-customizing at scale, drawing on lessons from our projects in Massachusetts and from wildfire rebuild work in Altadena.
More communities are facing the same shortage every year, and the traditional system isn't built to fix it. We're not optimizing construction. We're replacing the system entirely, with a production-scale facility and a five-story apartment building next on our roadmap, on the way to becoming the engine of housing abundance across the United States and 1 million homes by 2045.
